New Jersey Inmate Population is a private reference site, not a government office. It cannot confirm whether someone is in custody, approve a release, post bond, schedule a visit, correct an official record, or retrieve booking records for you. Those requests must go to the agency or records custodian that controls the record.
Where to Send New Jersey Custody and Records Questions
New Jersey custody information is divided among state prisons, county jails, federal custody, immigration detention, courts, and public-records custodians. Use the route below that matches the record you need.
- NJDOC offender-search data: Questions or comments about information posted in the NJDOC Offender Search must be sent in writing to State of New Jersey, Department of Corrections, PO Box 863, ATTN: Correspondence Unit, Trenton, NJ 08625. NJDOC states that phone inquiries about offender information cannot be honored.
- State records and NJDOC records requests: Use OPRA Central or the New Jersey State Records Request Form for identifiable government records. New Jersey's Open Public Records Act is N.J.S. 47:1A-1 et seq.; OPRA requests should describe records, date ranges, facilities, and names or identifiers when appropriate.
- County jail records: County jail records usually belong to the county sheriff, county department of corrections, county counsel, county clerk, OPRA office, or local records portal. Start with the County Directory to reach the county page, then use that county's jail roster and records-custodian information.
- Federal custody: Use the federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator for people in BOP custody, including federal institutions such as FCI Fort Dix and FCI Fairton. BOP records are not NJDOC records and are not county jail records.
- ICE civil immigration detention: Use ICE's Online Detainee Locator System for immigration detention searches. ICE searches may require an A-number or exact biographical information, and immigration custody is separate from criminal sentence custody.
- New Jersey court cases: Use New Jersey Courts Find a Case and related portal tools for criminal case records, judgments, complaint numbers, indictment numbers, SBI-number searches, and municipal case information. Court records and custody records are maintained in separate systems.
- VINELink notifications: Use New Jersey VINE / VINELink when you need custody-status notifications or victim-notification registration. VINE can supplement a roster or locator, but it does not replace NJDOC, county jail, BOP, ICE, or court records.
- Facility-specific questions: Use the Facility Directory to identify whether the facility is a county jail, NJDOC prison, federal institution, ICE detention facility, or residential community release program before contacting the responsible office.
